Folk costumes of Veli Lošinj and Mali Lošinj

Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj, as important maritime centres in the 18th and 19th centuries, were increasingly exposed to international fashion trends; consequently, rural culture was replaced with the urban one. The folk costumes of the island of Losinj were also influenced by fashion and they soon acquired the characteristics of the then world fashion trends. Already in the second half of the 18th century, the influence of the Rococo style clothing was evident throughout the island, while the old island folk costume was slowly abandoned. It has not been preserved to the present day, but we can learn about its appearance from the chronicles written in the 18th and 19th centuries, as also from the few surviving portraits painted in the same period. In 2010 by using the aforementioned sources, the International Centre for Cultural Services - Rental Workshop of National Costumes, made reconstructions of the traditional costumes of Veli Lošinj and Mali Lošinj, commissioned by the Lošinj Museum.
