FACADES
18. 07. – 06. 08. 2005.
Self-denial, this virtue of a few, may signify the oblivion in today's capricious time, which shows to be correctly rhytmical.
Mihovil Depope (born in 1926, active in painting for half a century) is mostly unknown painter to the public. Detached from the recent events and trends, he «stands apart» in the contemplative atmosphere of Krk. His art (from the 80's close to abstraction) communicates the man inhabited everywhere, long ago. The state of consciousness as the (self)apprehension of humanity. Fragile and persistent, ethereal and heavy, limpid and dense, transparent and masked, cold and luminous... By reconstructing the reality and dematerializing the manifestation, Depope is trying to penetrate into the experienced, emotional worlds which invisibly connect the man into one. Precisely in water-colours, in this direct, fast and practically transparent technique, the marked existential moment may express the continuous duration, the search for the essence, both artistic and vital. Hidden within the sights and facades of the manifestation.
Developing the water-colour technique together with the ability to mediate expressively in recognizable manner, the author has built, after «Windows», the recent cycle «Facades».
The variable series of imaginative, inner «landscapes» has been established by strained units of whitish edges and condensed event in the centre. It is dynamized by vertical, expanding and overlapping moves and by more mobile, shorter and distinguishing permeable coats of paint as well. Graphically based and condensed coating is harmonized by chromatic rhythm, merge or counterpoint. Sometimes within the summary formations which are structured as purified screen of basic elements, the primary «contents» delivered from the unessential.
Louder and more silent accents of the saturated graphics and smothered colours are imbued by luminous emphasis of warmer colours and uncovered whiteness of the paper. Equivalent by gestures, the tectonics of the composition has been activated as well as the energetic value of the base which is breaking through.
The colour accents within predominantly cold shades, the distinguishing strength and direction of the lines act like a psychogram. Like variously erected, transformed veils from beyond which mediate the inner worlds. Facades opened by water-colours give the breath of alteration, heading to firmness, the reflection of temperament, movement of intuition, concentration, the expression of deliberation, stream of the accidental thought... The accomplished creative vision, artistically devoted, sensitively adjusted, open to experience and interpretation, in some segments demanding full attention and the most valuable phenomenon today, time.

BIOGRAPHY
Mihovil Depope was born in 1926 in Skrpčići on the island of Krk. After finishing his secondary schooling he graduated from the Education Academy in Rijeka in the study group for Fine Arts in 1971, after which he started working as an art educator in 1972/73.
He started drawing in his early years, living in modest condition which would direct him towards art where he remained independent until the present day. Humble and self-denying, out of every «stream» and «alteration» in contemporary Croatian art, he stayed on his island both as a man and as a painter defending his right to have his own option and freedom of art expression.
Yet, precisely this virtue of «humbleness» is disclosured here as an advantage.
To remain «one's own» is a privilege these days.
Mihovil Depope changes the technique of water-colours in his art creativity, which brings the freshness, the beauty and the clearness of the painting.
After the unit «Windows and Cages» he addresses to us with the cycle «Facades». All these cycles address to a «man» and his apprehension of the world.
Facades are actually faces, they speak the language of aspiration, vivacity, decrepitude or falling, expectations or hope and they represent the universal feeling regardless of the place and time.
He exposed on about twenty one-man exhibitions, participated on many group exhibitions of water-colours in the country and abroad.
He won many awards and acknowledgments.
Mihovil Depope lives and works in Krk, as an independent artist.
