The house in the square named Pjaceta of St. Martin in Cres represents, for almost 30 years, a special place in the creational landscape of Karlo Trumbetaš. Arriving here not only in summer, Trumbetaš-musician becomes Trumbetaš-sculptor who pulls out «melodies» from the stern and tough walnut-wood of his native Podravina.
In years his sculptures assumed increasingly the Mediterranean simplicity and directness. Was it the immenseness of the open sea, where all that is human appears so small and fragile, which inspired the artist to abandon every detail of no importance? The body remains nothing but smoothly rounded contour and warm colour of the wood gets more and more the distinctive whiteness of the island stone. The sea dragged in themes as well – wooden sailors salute the wooden set sails.
Yet, Trumbetaš pulled out the most delicate melodies by fine lines of his drawings and paintings made in combined technique. Figures with elongated heads bent in surprise or melancholy, faces reduced to a gaze of big eyes, floating in the empty background like tender and deeply experienced music.
Sculptures, drawings and, lately, paintings are well known to Croatian art lovers. He exhibited also on our islands, firstly in Mali Lošinj (National Educational Centre, 1988), then in Cres (Small Gallery «Arsan», Cres Museum, 1994 and in the Gallery «ART», Marina Cres, 1995 to 2002). By this exposition of his latest works put in the Museum-Gallery Kula in Veli Lošinj, Trumbetaš - after longer period of time, presents himself to art lovers in Lošinj, confirming his permanent presence on our islands.
