Exhibition "Through Calm Seas and Storms" by Aldina Stuparich Burić
Fritzi GallerySeptember 7 - October 16, 2021
Mali Lošinj
The exhibition entitled Through Calm Seas and Storms by the self-taught painter Aldina
Stuparich Burić is dedicated to the primordial connection of the people of Lošinj with the sea
and seafaring, the rich maritime and shipbuilding tradition of the island. It was created as a
result of cooperation between the Lošinj Museum and the author, and the Tourist Board of the
Town of Mali Lošinj as part of the project Lošinj Sails Around the World.
Aldina continued to paint maritime votive paintings on request following the example and
tradition of her father. Since the last joint exhibition Hommage to Sailboats that she had with
her father at the Fritzi Gallery in 2007, Aldina has been thinking about donating her father’s
paintings to the Lošinj Museum. We are sincerely grateful to her for the donation and we will
include them in the Collection of Lošinj Authors.
In numerous creative conversations during the organization of the exhibition, we came up
with the idea that Aldina paints on request of the Museum the ships that we do not have in
the permanent exhibition at the Tower Museum, hence, this time not for the votive of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary or Annunziata in Mali Lošinj; their story is
extremely interesting and related to our people , both shipbuilders and sailors from the island.
It was agreed that the author would paint eight sailing ships: Santo Domenico, Commercio,
Primo Lussignano, Reno, Sator - Bad Luck sailing ship, Imperatrice Elisabetta, Franceso
Giuseppe I and Ettore M - the last sailing ship built in Lošinj. In addition to these eight sailing
ships, Aldina will present the works created in the last ten years. Each painting of a sailing
ship is accompanied by a classic description and a story.
With her work, Aldina takes us back to the golden age of the Lošinj seafaring and its most
famous period of sailing ships.
With the aim of preserving and valorising the maritime heritage of Lošinj, the paintings from
this exhibition will be included in the Collection of Lošinj Authors and in the foreseeable future
they will become part of the permanent exhibition at the Tower Museum in Veli Lošinj dedicated to maritime affairs.
