Exhibition "From the Adriatic Sea to the Arctic"
Fritzi Palace, Mali Lošinj7th September - 8th October 2022
In Austria, in January 1871, two
ambitious young researchers, Weyprecht and Payer, after scientific consultation
with Petermann, launched a large science project on Austro-Hungarian Arctic
research. The main objective of the expedition was to try to find a route to
the northeast, sailing through the supposedly "non-frozen sea" along
the coasts of Russia
and Siberia to get to the passage between Asia and America
and reach the Pacific Ocean. The expedition
will try to get as far north as possible, but reaching the North Pole was not
its first goal. During their stay in the north, the expedition members will conduct
intensive scientific data gathering. Having obtained the official support of
the Austrian Geographical Society in Vienna,
they started with raising money, along with the organization of preliminary studies
of the Arctic areas, collection of scientific equipment and what is most
important for us - gathering a crew...
