Developing the theme of landscape as consummate place for the overlapping of suvjective impulses and objective incentives, Jasenka Bulj has uncovered the basis of a subtle dialogue between the intimate and the external space. Oscillating between utopian evocations of  the ideal place and the dissipating unease of contemporary life, she has managed to endow on the classic theme a contemporary aura and make it a communicative form, persuasive in articulation, a kind of place of truth. This is shown by the selection of paintings and drawings created in the last three years (2004 to 2006), in which the functionality of sketch – like linearity and staccato, gestual applications of colour, which have the effect of brush drawing, suggestively combine the sensitive venation of plastic circulation and the vital plasma of atmosphere, soil and sea with the dynamics of constant change.
Applaing the same technique, but a different modulation with respect to line and paint, Jasenka Bulj defines the space with loose textures and subtle variations, with the freshness of spontaneously organised impulses of emotional ans real reverberations. The fragile visual yearn of line and colour in the works from 2004 to 2005 covers islands of dreamy destinations with a gossamer haze of white, with the energy of self-determination and with adumbrations of an intimate map. An unreal lightness investa them with the aura of lost domains. In the paintings Space of Silence (2006) with the tectonics of a thicker reticulation of lines that work by the suggestion of worrying ecological signals and gradual definition of the surface of the sea with stronger and weaker brushstrokes, with denser and more transparent applicationes of paint, with intervals and accentuation, the painter stresses the live, pulsing nature of the natural world, as well as the original „capacity of resistance“.
In the fluctuating nature of the painting in which the means makes the essence visible, language is the site of deed and communication. With tonality of colour and magnetic accumulation of lines of force, by denser, more coagulated and then with lighter, looser passages, with a softness and then sharpness of handwriting, with the delicacy of the visual facts and their phantasmagorical effects, the painter creates convincing topoi, with overlapping properties of the natural world and of anthropogenic influences, in insights into the way they are reciprocally defined. In contemporary Croatian painting, Jasenka Bulj has occupied a highly prominent position with the elaboration of a topic and expression that she develops with the measure of her own insights as „active subject“ and her capacity for polyphonic articulation in the fundamental register of the resources employed.

Jasenka Bulj was born in Split. She graduated from the Zagreb Academy of Art where she studied under professor Nikola Reiser. She specialized with professor Reiser and professor Ljubo Ivančić. She lives and works in Zagreb and Ljubljana. She is member of Croatian professional artist organisations HDLU and ZSU. Her paintings were exhibited on many group exhibitions in European countries, and her one-man exhibitions were held in Bologna, Zagreb, Split and Ljubljana.
