The Museum tomorrow

Dislocation is fate of the Lošinj Museum. The Apoxiomenos museum in the Kvarner Palace in Mali Lošini is expected to be restored and opened by the end of 2010. It could become a part of the Lošinj Museum if the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia takes such decision. Among four departments of the Lošinj Museum one deals with researches related to underwater cultural heritage; for the time being, this department is “in founding”. Certain preparations in connection with the restoration and arrangement of old olive mill near the Franciscan monastery in Nerezine into the “Museum of olive growing” are underway; the idea of ethnographic collection on the island of Susak is to be taken in consideration as well.

Due to a lack of space for permanent exhibitions, the maritime history and history of tourism of Mali Lošinj will be represented with a series of temporary exhibitions, to be eventually consolidated into a virtual museum dedicated to a travel theme (travel as a necessity for seamen, travel as a pleasure for tourists).

The permanent exhibition of the Archaeological collection of Osor has not essentially changed for over twenty years and the building restoration is not yet completed. The preparations for the new permanent exhibition have started, which should bring back the splendour of the Gothic-Renaissance City Hall and the loggia and put the most valuable archaeological material kept in this collection under the spotlight.

A digitization project of museum and archival material is underway as well, in order to enable the on-line insight into the material for all interested users and thus make the professional public to elaborate themes from our cultural and historical inheritance which have been unknown so far.
Due to increased need for professional guidance, the idea of establishing the “guide school” intended for high school and university students has also been considered; after a series of lectures, terrain tours and a final exam, the students would receive a guide licence for the area of the City of Mali Lošinj.
